Matthew Schmidt from Cincinnati, OH
Aside from watch TCM, what do you do?
I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I love history, reading, being outdoors, music, and much more.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
I’d have to say an icee is a must when I go to a theatre but if I’m feeling extra sporty... I’ll get some milk duds as well.
What’s your favorite part of TCM?
The passion for all types of film as well as the individual people that made/make it great. Understanding the history behind it all is something that for me is just as interesting as the movies themselves. There is something for everyone.
What’s your favorite movie genre?
Gangster films. Not a hard one for me although I like a variety of genres including comedy and film noir. But the original gangster films of the 30’s have always been my favorite.
Who’s your favorite actor or actress or filmmaker of all time? And why?
Very tough considering the many different actors/actresses that I enjoy but I’ll stay true to my gangster roots and say James Cagney. Something about how he could portray a character that made you feel he was just being himself. The kind of guy that acted by looking the other guy in the eye and saying the lines as though he meant it.
Who would you be thrilled to meet, and what would you say?
Another hard one. I’ll go with Ginger Rogers. She always struck me as someone who was incredibly talented and adept in a variety roles in addition to her beauty. No matter what role she played, I always felt she had a little bit of herself in each one. I would love to sit down and talk to her and learn more about her as a person.
What do you collect?
Besides DVDs of course, as in A LOT of DVDs. My collecting has as large a variety as my interests. Books, vinyl records, antique radios, posters, mugs, and the best collection of all... experiences.
If you had to pick just one, what would be your favorite movie?
While I’m tempted to say a gangster movie like Angels With Dirty Faces, I will go with The Big Sleep. I’m a huge fan of film noir and the hard boiled detective story. It embodies everything I love about noir including the look and feel, the complicated plot, some of the best dialogue, the acting; all of it.
