Frank Detrano from Rancho Cucamonga, CA
Aside from watch TCM, what do you do?
I am a professional board artist and TV animation writer. When I'm on hiatus from the studios (a fancy word for being unemployed), I develop feature film and TV series projects (live action & animated) across all genres and age groups from kids to adults which includes writing the screenplays and designing the major characters with their respective worlds.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
Usually after dinner, my wife and I will enjoy a glass of wine while watching TCM, however the vintage will mostly depend on the movie genre. For a light hearted comedy, a fine Riesling. Romance? Chardonnay of course. An action adventure... a pinot noir. A suspenseful drama or film noir is paired with a cabernet sauvignon or merlot. We seldom watch horror movies anymore... we kept spilling the wine on the rug.
What’s your favorite part of TCM?
Having relocated from New York to California for animation, another reason was my fascination with the Hollywood movie industry, particularly the tinseltown of the 30s, 40s and 50s. TCM allows me to tap into that nostalgia with its unrivaled selection of classic films and stars. If there was ever a time machine, one of the places I'd love to visit would be Hollywood during these years. The level of A-list talent (and the supporting players) was staggering.
What’s your favorite movie genre?
Tough question, as I have many favorites in all genres. However, if pressed into choosing one, I'd have to say a rousing, epic action-adventure.
Who’s your favorite actor or actress or filmmaker of all time? And why?
Favorite actor... Errol Flynn. I'm pretty sure Errol would be the first one to admit (and laugh) that he was never in the caliber of other iconic actors like Spencer Tracey, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart or Laurence Olivier, etc. But what Flynn could do, that no other contemporary could, was excel as a romantic adventure hero and, most importantly, be believable in that role. Eighty years after his performance as Robin Hood and no one has ever leapt off the screen with the same charisma and bravura as his definitive portrayal. That says something. Maybe it's time his work deserved a posthumous Oscar.
Who would you be thrilled to meet, and what would you say?
Channeling that time machine again, I would have to choose Vivien Leigh. However, if this talented and beautiful actress ever smiled and raised her eyebrow in my direction, I don't think I'd have much to say. It would be an overwhelming experience, especially if she's decked out in that red velvet gown from Gone With the Wind.
What do you collect?
In addition to my TCM library, as an artist, I collect animated films from the classic Golden Age of Disney through the renaissance of the major studios today. Among my favorites are The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Iron Giant, Bolt, How to Train Your Dragon and The Polar Express, to name a few. I also have several animation cells and signed artwork and photos.
If you had to pick just one, what would be your favorite movie?
Not an action-adventure film, but still my choice would be Citizen Kane only because its star Orson Welles bestrides the movie like a colossus. A fact made more staggering by Welles being in his early twenties when he created it. CK has everything... a riveting plot, an enigmatic, multi-dimensional main character, an awesome screenplay, magnificent sets and performances, ground-breaking cinematography, a haunting theme by Bernard Hermann (a favorite composer) and all the scandalous backstory. The themes still resonate today... absolute power corrupting absolutely. And who can argue that the burning of the Rosebud sleigh is not one of the most brilliant & iconic endings in film history? I've watched Citizen Kane countless times and it still moves me.
