Madeleine Gilbert Spangler from Alpharetta, GA
Aside from watch TCM, what do you do?
I am a retired teacher.
What’s your favorite movie snack?
Movie popcorn of course. But also Charms suckers.
What’s your favorite part of TCM?
The movies themselves but I do love the commentaries before and after because I always learn something new.
What’s your favorite movie genre?
Screwball comedies and musicals.
Who’s your favorite actor or actress or filmmaker of all time? And why?
William Powell. He was always so suave and debonair and very funny when needed. The Thin Man and its sequels are great. I can watch them over and over and each time see something new. The dialogue, the deco architecture, the décor, clothes, the cars, etc. I love antiques and love seeing these items when they were not antiques but rather everyday items and wish my house was furnished like that.
Who would you be thrilled to meet, and what would you say?
Kim Novak as she was my favorite actress growing up. I would tell her how I painted my room lavender (her favorite color) and my parents gave me a lavender bedspread, shams, and curtains. My best friend had a Siamese cat named Pyewacket (after hers) and we pretended we were modern day witches just as she was. Also one of her names in Vertigo is my name, though spelled differently. So that just proved I would grow up to be her.
What do you collect?
Everything just about. I got that from my parents who were collectors. I have a good collection of movie star autographs, stills, ephemera, etc. I grew up loving the movies. My father managed Interstate theatres in our hometown in Texas, so that is what started me on the road to movies. I got to see movies over and over again for free. My birthday parties were all movie parties. My husband shares my love of antiques. We have advertising signs, furniture, telephones, and many other vintage collections.
If you had to pick just one, what would be your favorite movie?
West Side Story.
