Jan Rittenhouse from Issaquah, WA

Aside from watch TCM, what do you do?

I've been a part-time receptionist for our County library system for 16 years. As you can guess, I love to read! I'm almost exclusively a fiction reader, loving turn-of-the-century ghost stories, such as those by Ambrose Bierce, M.R. James and Lovecraft.

What’s your favorite movie snack?

I love to bake and have a sweet tooth, so we have constant sugar in the house. If my husband and I are going to enjoy a snacky dinner while watching TCM, though, we'll usually put together a cheese, cracker and fruit plate (now accompanied with a glass of something from the TCM wine club!). THEN comes dessert.

What’s your favorite part of TCM?

I love feeling like I'm part of a big family enjoying something special together, something John and I have felt keenly when we've attended the annual TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood. Older movies have such great stories, are often visually beautiful and, for the moment, whisk me back to a time that's comfortable and comforting.

What’s your favorite movie genre?

Film noir!

Who’s your favorite actor or actress or filmmaker of all time? And why?

Well, I'll have to answer all three: Edward G. Robinson, Ann Miller, and Alfred Hitchcock. When Mr. Robinson is on screen, I can't take my eyes off of him. Ann Miller just makes me happy, and Mr. Hitchcock made spooky films that I can actually watch. M.R. James would have loved them!

Who would you be thrilled to meet, and what would you say?

I'd be too tongue-tied to meet a famous person or say anything! When Shirley Jones was signing her autobiography at a Hollywood bookstore during the TCM Classic Film Festival, I couldn't even approach her - and she was there just for that purpose! When I met Amy Tan through a library function, I just muttered something incomprehensible.

What do you collect?

Anything Monkees related. Remember them?

If you had to pick just one, what would be your favorite movie?

This is the hardest question of all, but I'm going to say 42nd Street.

Thank you Jan!  For being in our Member Spotlight, we're sending you a Classic Movie Quotes mug from 42nd Street!  If you close your eyes, you can even pretend that it's a piece of Monkees memorabilia.
